Jürgen von Wechmar is the owner of Sunset Recording Studios, one of the most famous and respected recording studios in South Africa. He specialises in music production, composition, recording and mixing.

The studio was created by a musician, for musicians. Our friendly, musical attitude combined with world-class equipment and a private countryside location creates the perfect atmosphere for musicians and songwriters to unveil their musical creativity.

Jürgen started his career as sound engineer and music producer in early 1991. While studying Electric/Electronic engineering at Stellenbosch University (1991 – 1995) he also played guitar for various bands including Ark, Magic Blue Box, Another 48 Hours, 2-Man Acoustical Jam and Arkeology. During this time very little infrastructure was available for up-and-coming original South African bands. This led to Jürgen starting a home recording studio for the purpose of doing demos for his band Ark. At the end of 1995 his hobby turned into a professional venture and Sunset Recording Studios was born. Jürgen soon became popular among local Stellenbosch and Cape Town bands and artists. 17 Years later his client base has grown to a national and international level with credits on more than 150 albums.

Jürgen has been nominated for various SAMA and GERAAS Awards for Best Engineer and received the GERAAS award for Best Producer along with Schalk Joubert. Numerous albums recorded, mixed and produced by him have received SAMA, GERAAS, MK, ATKV, TEMPO Awards.

Jürgen also specialises in mixing singles and projects for Major label and independent South African and International clients. Most of these projects are recorded in studios across the world, with Jürgen adding his flavour in the mix.

Sunset Recording Studios are located on Wechmarshof Estate in the beautiful Banhoek-valley just outside Stellenbosch. (approximately 60km from Cape Town).

In 1995 the old Wechmarshof cheese factory was converted into a professional recording studio with great sounding acoustics, state of the art equipment, natural lighting, air conditioning and a relaxed atmosphere.

The air-conditioned control room was designed to be an accurate and detailed monitoring environment with natural light and a cosy atmosphere.

The world-class acoustics of the main studio has defined and controlled live characteristics. It is perfect for recording drums, piano and other acoustical instruments.

The isolation room, connected to the main studio by a large window, has dead acoustics and normally used for basic vocal recording during tracking.

The Sunset lounge is an open plan area, with a fireplace and bar, which walks out onto a terrace with a magnificent view. In summer you can relax in the Sunset Garden or go for a short hike on the farm's walking trail.
